How do you make our customers happy?
Together with our 47,000 partner sellers, Bol.com is changing retail to make daily life simpler for 13 million customers. By now, they can swipe and click through a catalog of 34 million articles. And it’s up to you to ensure that all those customer journeys lead to the right buying decisions.
The biggest challenge
As Architect, you work in the ‘Decide to buy’ product area. Our mission is to help consumers decide on the right product (combinations) for their needs, effortlessly and confidently. To be more specific, we try to meet four main customer requirements. The first is comprehend: we want to help customers evaluate products, for example, with reviews. We also want to make it easy to compare products: we help customers to compare articles and find alternatives, e.g., with product recommendations such as ‘Customers who viewed this item also viewed…’ or by offering product comparison pages. Thirdly, we help customers decide on products, for example, by highlighting USPs and displaying inventory and seller information. And, last but not least, we provide customers with complete, ‘comprehensive solutions’, for example by suggesting a compatible bulb to go with a lamp. But how do we facilitate those ambitions?
As Product Architect, you are a (welcome) member of a large, self-steering product team in which IT and business professionals work side-by-side. You are the architecture expert of the Decide to Buy product. You counsel colleagues on the strategic level to ensure we meet product targets and maintain our rapid pace of innovation. You sign off on an architecture that helps us realize our platform ambitions. A role with substantial impact, particularly for our 13 million customers, as your work determines whether they buy the products they need the most.
You are a member of the leadership team for your product and co-responsible, along with the product and engineering manager, for the success of innovations within your domain. This requires you to challenge colleagues positively and constructively and keep everyone working towards shared goals. You have a solid and well-founded vision, are an attentive listener who asks the right questions, and use your strong communication skills to generate commitment to the architecture and planned innovations. Your ability to ‘connect’ is key to achieving sustainable success. One of your primary responsibilities is creating and promoting a long-term vision (3-5 years). You will get help, of course, because we believe in bottom-up innovation. Your vision will be the product of a collaborative process involving scrum teams, tech leads, and business analysts in your domain.
- Create an ambitious vision for the product, together with business and IT-colleagues
- Use that vision to determine in which direction our landscape should evolve
- Build expertise and share knowledge with your product team and the larger organization; become a valued discussion partner at all levels of the organization
- Connect products from a holistic view of the organization
- Collaborate intensively with IT and business teams, particularly on the strategic level
- Win the trust of key decision-makers and provide (un)solicited advice on product-related issues
Why you can make the difference
Because you are passionate about pioneering and combine a long-term vision with the talent to make innovative ideas practicable. Stakeholder management and leadership skills are essential, as are powerful communication skills and the audacity to question the status quo. You strive to realize your ideas and operate from a foundation of relationships rather than authority. You can maintain an overview of ongoing and planned initiatives and foresee the impact of decisions on the application landscape. You are self-starting and sure-footed in a dynamic environment in which hierarchy and job responsibilities can be fluid concepts. You are creative and flexible in choosing how to present your message, e.g., presentations or IT architecture designs. A background in technical consultancy is not a requirement, but it would make for a good match. Analytical and conceptual skills are essential. As are genuine enthusiasm and an entrepreneurial personality. You should also be a strategic thinker with an affinity for implementing projects: the journey is just as valuable as crossing the finish line.
This product area consists of five innovation teams: a webshop team, two app teams, and two service teams. Collectively, we cover all of the required disciplines to realize scalable functionalities and put them at our customers’ fingertips, whether they use or webshop or the app. We also work closely with the product teams that manage the underlying data for our functionalities, such the Product Catalog and the Offer Highway.

Where you’ll work
At the premier online retail tech platform in the Netherlands and Belgium. A platform where 13 million Dutch and Belgian customers can choose from over 34 million articles. Our five innovation teams develop and maintain their software autonomously, in accordance with the DevOps philosophy. You report to the Lead Architect of the domain and participate in bol.com’s central architecture team. Here you can share and calibrate your ideas with a large group of colleague architects.
