Navigating the path from data science to leadership Exploring the data with Fleur van der Heiden

At bol.com we love to grow, in all different directions. Whether it’s by taking on a leadership position, deepening expertise or pursuing a completely new career path, our colleagues are encouraged to continuously challenge themselves and try out new things. In our ´Exploring the Data´ blog series, we catch up with Data Scientists at bol.com who have made career switches, changed directions, or explored different departments. You’ll meet people from diverse backgrounds and with a range of personalities – analytical, introverted, outgoing, chaotic, creative, and practical. But they all share a common trait: the courage to grow, to try something new, and to discover what works best for them.

After a few years of working as an (Exploratory) Data Scientist, Fleur became eager to expand her horizons and pursue new opportunities in the world of data science at bol.com. Her decision to transition to a leadership role as Lead Data Analyst has proven to be a wise one. “I really enjoy working with a group of like-minded people, all of them so passionate about data analytics and engineering. The fact that I’m also helping other analysts grow in both their careers and as a person, makes my work even more rewarding and fulfilling.”

Doing what you love

In her previous role as a Data Scientist, Fleur loved having a direct impact on customer behaviour. “I figured that in my new role, I would have to let go of certain aspects of my job that I liked so much. I was willing to give up things such as engineering and automated decision-making, to be able to take that next step in my career. Funny enough, I soon discovered that my current role allows me to continue to engage in the work that I love.”

“As a Lead Data Analyst, I have the opportunity to work in the field of Analytics Engineering, which means that I can still indulge my passion for engineering for example, while improving the efficiency of our data pipelines. Additionally, I am able to participate in important decision-making processes within the company. Although the scope and scale of my contributions may not always be the same as they were in my previous role, I am still making a meaningful impact and feel a great sense of relevance in my work.”

”I was excited about the prospect of a leadership role, but I didn’t want to give up working in the field of data analytics. Fortunately, this job allows me to do both, while also being able to work in a team, have fun and accomplish our goals together.”

Getting there together

Due to her experience and knowledge in the field of Data Analytics, Fleur is able to effectively lead and mentor her colleagues, while simultaneously honing her own skills. “I was excited about the prospect of a leadership role, but I didn’t want to give up working in the field of data analytics. Fortunately, this job allows me to do both, while also being able to work in a team, have fun and accomplish our goals together.”

When asked about tips for those considering a similar career transition, Fleur advises: “I would always suggest reaching out to others for guidance. Speak to your colleagues, managers, family members and friends about how they see you fitting into a different role, and what qualities they believe you possess. Not only will you receive valuable feedback, but you will also discover that most people are eager to help you, connect you to the right persons, and create unique opportunities to make your transition as smooth and successful as possible.”
