How do you make our customers happy?

Bol.com is a digital native platform retailer that employs over 450 software engineers, divided into 100 autonomous scrum teams. Given the size of our tech community and the complex challenges that go hand in hand with our disruptive business model, our technical platform needs to be fast, robust and scalable. But how can we organize this quickly evolving platform into a well-oiled machine that reliably supports the needs of the developers who add value for internal and external clients? It’s up to you to advance, advocate and, as coach of 3-5 product tech leads and inspiration to the wider tech community, execute the vision/strategy that future-proofs our technical platform.

Why you can make the difference

Because you are an equally visionary and pragmatic Architect with a solid infrastructure and software development track record that runs the gamut of distributed systems, scaling, clustering, application states et cetera. At the risk of sounding pedantic: this role actually requires a firm grasp of ‘low level stuff’, e.g. how TCP differs from UDP, what http actually does, how to debug REST services, etc. Technical prowess aside, we expect our soon-to-be colleague to be a true tech platform visionary and ambassador. Someone who can set the course, and make sure that everyone sees the merits of that course. In order to do so, you need to speak at least three languages: the language of the technical platform team, the language of the developers in our feature teams, and the language of the business. Also important, is you can drive decision-making processes under duress, and have a keen sense of what is good enough. It’s always tempting to build an F1 car, but if a family sedan gets us there as well, that might be the better option.

Your responsibilities as Architect Technical Platform?

  • Lead the technical (long-term) vision of our Tech Platform teams
  • Coach and inspire the engineers within the domain and, in turn be inspired by them
  • Challenge the team on solutions (e.g. with regards to flexibility, scalability, security, business/customer value, feasibility, et cetera)
  • Protect consistency of technology stack across both your domain and IT
  • Spot trends, gather in-depth knowledge and share insights within our tech community
  • Define and advocate bol.com ways of working across both your space and IT
  • Guide tech leads to work on strategic topics including cloud and API’s, help maintain focus and balance between ‘quick & dirty’ and long-term solutions (technical debt)

As Architect Technical Platform you coach and inspire 3-5 product tech leads within the tech platform domain. You are responsible for developing and protecting the overall technical vision and decisions, such as with regard to domain APIs and the role of site reliability engineers. You also drive cross-product initiatives, including technical frameworks, cloud and API.  You aim to minimize ‘use case-based development’ and inspire the team to approach their job holistically, focusing on an architecture that enables stability and extendibility of the platform, so continuous rework becomes a thing of the past.

 

Although you advocate experimenting, it’s up to you to ensure that those experiments contribute to (rather than distract from) broader goals. It should go without saying that you keep close tabs on the community ‘your’ platform facilitates, so you are attuned to evolving needs. Pretty challenging, because the tech platform is the home away from home for ~100 scrum teams. And although stability is pivotal, sometimes changes have to be implemented on the spot. In this role you work closely with the Technical Platform Product Manager and the other Leads within IT. You are a member of the Technical Space Management team and report to the Manager Technical Platform.
