Cloud Database Engineer Help us reach cloud nine for data storage!

Go straight to:

How do you make our customers happy?

Well, for your fellow cloud database engineer and hopefully future teammate, composing this text was a tougher-than-expected challenge. It is a very challenging role to administer all our databases 24/7, both in datacenter and Cloud. Want to help us engineer our data infrastructure in the datacenter and at GCP? Want to discover what data infrastructure engineering is all about in one of the biggest and most dynamic infrastructures the Netherlands has to offer?

Your responsibilities as a Cloud Database Engineer

We are heavy users of databases: we have many databases running in the cloud and in our datacenter: Oracle, Postgres, CloudSQL, Datastore and Bigtable. We are in the midst of migrating our databases to the cloud. It’s up to you and your team to run and administrer the cloud and datacenter databases. To engineer new features and to make sure existing features stay available, secure and cost effective. One of the big challenges at the moment is the ability to store personal information in a reliable and secure way in the cloud databases and other data structures.

At we believe in agility & autonomy, so our Product teams are able to provision databases themselves. For provisioning, all cloud teams use an in-house built provisioning system developed on top of Puppet, Terraform and Kubectl. With access to alpha/private GCP features we are able to stay ahead of the curve.

Why you can make a difference

Because you bring the whole package: cloud database engineering (preferably GCP), Postgres, Kubernetes, Puppet, scripting and performance tuning. If you are familiar with Oracle or system engineering, even better! Knowledge of databases and Linux in general is a must. But hey, we take it, that’s more or less a given.

3 reasons why this is(n’t) for you

  • Yes, because you want to be an active member of a seasoned and skilled database team
  • Yes, because you love to chat about making things better and welcome different viewpoints
  • Yes, because you prefer to automate tasks instead of doing things over and over again
  • Not, because you have no clue how to use SQL – terra incognita
  • Not, because you blindly make changes in production
  • Not, because you are a lone wolf – sharing knowledge is for sheep

Where you’ll work

As Cloud Database Engineer, you’re on our database and storage team. Together with two other teams, we form a group focused on data: Storing data in databases and other data structures, transporting data to the cloud and doing data analytics. These 3 teams together form the Data fleet, responsible for the availability, performance and security of all of our data.

That group is, in turn, part of the Space that manages our technical platform. At our scale it makes sense to offer a platform to our ~100 product teams, so they can focus on building awesome software without having to worry (too much) about the infrastructure. We are a market leader with the spirit of an energetic scale up. Our strength is based on our cooperation as equals and our drive to continuously improve each other. You can accomplish only so much on your own as a Cloud Database Engineer. And so much more with your 2000 colleagues.
