How do you make our customers happy?
Bol.com has over 100 product teams. Our team provides the monitoring, metrics & logging platform to all these teams to be successful. This includes Prometheus, Thanos, ELK stack, and Grafana. We are making the last push to get our final systems into the cloud, ready to reap the full benefits of what Kubernetes has to offer for our team, and the scrum teams we help to be self-service.
Would you like to help us make life easier for all our engineers, in one of the biggest and most dynamic infrastructures the Netherlands has to offer?
Your responsibilities as a Cloud Engineer
We are heavy users of Kubernetes: we have many thousands of pods running on multiple GKE clusters. At bol.com we believe in agile & autonomy, so our product teams are able to provision GCP projects and Kubernetes namespaces themselves. For provisioning, all cloud teams use an in-house built provisioning system developed on top of Puppet, Terraform and Kubectl. With access to alpha/private GCP features we are able to stay ahead of the curve. We have just completed rolling out Istio in our GKE clusters to create one big service mesh. All of this results in some rather stormy clouds, so we balance feature engineering with reliability engineering.
Our team needs to make sure that both the new kids on the block, as the seasoned veterans are able to build and run their services. Whether this is by providing sane defaults in terms of logging and metrics, or explaining to teams how to optimize their alerting schemes for their new service in PRO. It’s up to you and your team to engineer new features and to make sure existing features stay available, secure and cost effective. Together with three other teams, we form a group focused on building and running services in both our data centers and Google’s cloud. That group is, in turn, part of the Space that manages our technical platform. At our scale it makes sense to offer a platform to our ~100 product teams, so they can focus on building awesome software without having to reinvent the wheel when it comes to monitoring & logging, and applying best practices in a service.
Why you can make a difference
Because you bring the whole package: reliability engineering experience in a cloud environment (preferably GCP), Kubernetes, Prometheus, ELK, Grafana. If you are also familiar with Puppet, and service meshes like Istio, even better! Development skills in a language like Python, Go or Java can be helpful.
