Cloud System Engineer Help us reach cloud nine for data storage!

Go straight to:

How do you make our customers happy?

Although our business model may sound familiar, our approach to network retailing sets us apart from the usual suspects. We opt for a more localized approach (up close and personal!) and our ways of working reflect our idiosyncratic DNA. At, it’s all about autonomy and taking ownership, so end-to-end responsibility is the norm. Can you shoulder that?

Your responsibilities as Cloud System Engineer

We are heavy users of data storage solutions: we have many of them running in the cloud and in our datacenter. At we believe in agility & autonomy, so our Product teams are able to provision cloud resources themselves. For that they  use an in-house built provisioning system developed on top of Puppet, Terraform and Kubectl, which you will help to extend and improve.

With access to alpha/private GCP features we are able to stay ahead of the curve. We are in the midst of migrating our applications to the cloud. One of the big challenges at the moment is the ability to store personal information in a reliable and secure way in the cloud.

It’s up to you and your team to run the cloud and datacenter data and storage solutions. To engineer new features and to make sure existing features stay available, secure and cost effective. Together with two other teams, we form a group focused on storage and data technologies: storing data in databases and other data structures, transporting data to the cloud and doing data analytics. That group is, in turn, part of the Space that manages our technical platform  – the one that our ~100 product teams use, so they can focus on building awesome software without having to worry (too much) about the infrastructure.

Why you can make a difference

Because you bring the whole package: cloud system engineering (preferably GCP), Redhat/Linux, Kubernetes, Puppet, Terraform and scripting. If you are familiar with Postgres or Oracle even better! Knowledge (basic) of databases and Linux in general is a must. But hey, we take it, that’s more or less a given.

Your responsibilities as Cloud System Engineer

  • Developing robust, reliable and secure solutions that are used by 100+ development teams
  • Thinking of ways to make self-service solutions scalable and future-proof
  • Taking full, end-to-end ownership over your solutions
  • Taking full advantage of everything the (Google) Cloud has to offer

As a Cloud System Engineer, you will join one of our teams within The Platform Space, keeping the fabric of our entire universe together. We enable roughly 600 developers in other spaces to shine like stars. Home to the hardcore techies, we deliver the self-service solutions for Data: CloudSQL, Datastore, Bigtable, Buckets and more with technologies like Puppet, Kubernetes, Kubectl and Terraform.

3 reasons why this is(n’t) for you

  • Yes, because you want to be an active member of a seasoned and skilled engineering team
  • Yes, because you’re a true pioneer, both when it comes to coding and tooling
  • Yes, because you prefer to automate tasks instead of doing things over and over again
  • Not, because you blindly make changes in production
  • Not, because you are a lone wolf – sharing knowledge is for sheep
  • Not, because you’re afraid when you realize you’re the one who is responsible for creating solutions for 2-billion-rows data sets
