How do you make our customers happy?
With over 10 million customers and a catalog of over 16 million products, bol.com is the most popular online retail platform in The Netherlands and Belgium. Our roots are as a ‘traditional’ online retailer, but we now embrace a platform-first philosophy. And while we do have a few international ‘platform peers’, we don’t copy/paste their practices. Instead, we opt for a localized and personalized approach.
Data-driven and adventurous (making mistakes is no biggie, as long as learnings are shared), we intend to deliver on our promise to make life easier and more fun for our customers. And that is exactly what our 700 IT professionals (25% internationals), who comprise 150+ autonomous Scrum teams, do on a daily basis.
The biggest challenge
As mentioned, we love to invent our platform wheel ourselves. So, we need to come up with clever, infinitely scalable solutions to intricate challenges. Within the IT Logistics & Retailer1 Space, we are currently developing a service that determines the wholesale prices we should pay our partners. Which may sound simple, but it involves developing and implementing several nontrivial rules and algorithms.
For example, because the wholesale price decreases as we sell more of a product. And because this discount can vary from supplier to supplier, and from product to product.
Your responsibilities as Go Software Engineer
- Develop clean, high-performance code, (mainly) in Go;
- Think of ways to make team solutions scalable and future-proof;
- Team up with business stakeholders to ensure that solutions add sufficient value;
- Take full, end-to-end ownership over all team solutions;
- Experiment with cutting-edge tooling – including tooling you add to the stack.
As Go Software Engineer you are a (very!) welcome member of the team that sets wholesale pricing discounts in real time. If thinking outside the box and tinkering with algorithms energizes you, you’ll feel right at home. Technical challenges aside, perks include end-to-end (team) ownership, lots of autonomy and an inspiring culture. You build it – you run it – you love it is our mantra, and we live it every day.
Your primary tech stack includes Go, MongoDB and Postgres.
3 reasons why this is(n’t) for you
- Yes, because you are a strong backer of Go, the truly universal language
- Yes, because you’re a pioneer, both when it comes to coding and tooling
- Yes, because you are at home in Google Cloud Stack. Java8 knowledge is welcome.
- Not, because you’re only in IT for the money and don’t care much for output
- Not, because you live in libraries and can’t survive without them
- Not, because you want to be taken by the hand; autonomy & ownership are not your thing
Where you’ll work
You’ll join a Scrum team within the IT Logistics & Retailer1 Space.
The culture? Think ‘campus’, including a game room and soccer field. Despite our size, we poke fun at rigid rules and traditional work structures. We may be a market leader, but you won’t get a whiff of the corporate odor you associate with that. Our strength derives from working together as equals and constantly improving each other. After all, you can accomplish great things on your own, but so much more with your colleagues!
Given that over 25% of our IT staff consists of internationals, we have plenty of relocation experience. As for our ways of working, check out the videos. For info on current challenges (yep, we share code), visit the Techlab!
