How do you make our customers happy?

Bol.com is changing retail to make daily life simpler for 12 million customers. Together with 42,000 partners who do business on our retail tech platform, we offer 28+ million articles. And those numbers will continue to rise. Quickly. And substantially. Given the greenfield setting we operate in – our platform peers are few and far between – we need to develop our own best practices. And we need to innovate at break-neck speed to stay ahead of evolving customer demands. That goes for all of our functional domains, particularly from a tech perspective. Can you help us accelerate our development speed?

The biggest challenge

Bol.com was one of the first major Dutch/Belgian players to adopt the Agile philosophy. Now we are on a fast track to becoming one of the first fully product-driven organizations. This is a major transitional process that impacts everything we think and do. This shift includes viewing our IT infrastructure and the apps, web shop, and everything else that runs on it as products. The tech platform (operated by 70 engineers) is at the heart of our IT environment. It is a shared foundation that developers (700 engineers, and counting) build and innovate their (sub)products on. As we grow, we expect the platform to increasingly contribute to bol.com’s innovation speed. But how should the platform meet the exacting needs of our developers? How should we optimize and maintain it for the 120+ autonomous innovation teams that believe in You build it, You run it, You love it? It’s up to you to lead the newly formed team of product managers and product owners that provide the necessary answers. Mind: lead is the operative word here, because this role is not about managing but about providing visionary leadership. Step-change improvements in the product management craft are called for, and we need to instill a user-centric mindset across the board.

Your responsibilities as Head of Product Management Tech Platform

You sign off on a clearly defined product vision (already in place but subject to ongoing rethinking) and strategy for this mission-critical product, ensuring alignment with user groups and bol.com stakeholder needs/ambitions. To do so, you leverage input from product owners, business analysts and business counterparts, in a co-leadership arrangement with engineering. Success in this role hinges on your talent to align stakeholders and manage functional dependencies effectively. You need to communicate, sell, and promote your vision to a broad range of stakeholders, including the tech-savvy professionals within your domain. Bridging technical with more operational perspectives is key, as is managing customer expectations effectively in a fluid environment. Of note: the cost of the product is also in scope, so you need to safeguard products are fit for purpose, while keeping firm tabs on the budgets.

As you (hopefully) know, tech platforms for developer productivity are a trending topic among large tech companies, and you should bring a solid understanding of current developments to set realistic product and delivery expectations. We already have partial lift-off: about 50% of our data center already runs natively in the cloud, which speeds up innovation and improves usability for our developer community. We will eventually run the vast majority of our workloads in the cloud but some parts of our operation will remain on-premise, so you have to take a hybrid setting into account.

That calls for a genuine interest in IT infrastructures, cloud computing, and software development practices, plus the ability to determine the best choices for our unique situation. You inspire and coach the team (10+ Product Managers, Product Owners, et all) to leverage user research, market insights and experimentation to drive product discovery, and provide them with a sounding board for ideas. You do so from a developer perspective: what ‘works; for the technical platform, won’t necessarily work for our users. So you champion user-centric and design-led thinking, both within the team and the broader organization.
