The Product Catalog team sees to this by processing and enriching the product information of 30,000 partners, and by making sure our product catalog (20 million articles!) is available 24/7, across the board. The biggest challenge

Our Product Catalog is one of the biggest in Europe, and second to none in the Netherlands and Belgium. Both in terms of the amount of product information, and the number of ‘contributing parties’. After all, we have 30,000partners that add products and update their product information daily. Given that business model, we need to identify, complete, enrich and correct product information in real-time and at scale. This requires putting advanced predictive models smack in the heart of a mission critical technology stack. There is a lot to gain by automating the interpretation of our product information: “Are these the right batteries for the mouse I put in my basket?” “Does this cover fit my smartphone?” The possibilities are endless, and it is up to you to prioritize them – and turn them into reality.

Your responsibilities as Product Owner for Product Catalog Data Science

  • You help your team leverage machine learning to continuously improve the product
  • You identify the catalog’s current opportunities and weaknesses and incorporate these insights into a new overarching vision
  • You promote an experiment-driven way of working and ensure features work flawlessly
  • You promote your vision and generate firm buy-in from all stakeholders

As Product Owner, you maximize the Product Catalog’s impact on customers, partners and internal users. In order to achieve that goal, you work with a team of two data scientists and two software engineers, and alongside business/data analysts and product owners from the Product Catalog team. A successful outcome also hinges on the adoption of your work by many additional stakeholders,such as the teams that operate partner-facing products (how can we make it easier for 30,000 partners to manage their product range?), customer-facing colleagues (e.g. the Search team that relies on high quality data sources to make search results ever more relevant) and the commercial (store) operation.

Your team primarily focuses on leveraging Machine Learning methodologies to (1) smoothen the ingestion of product information into our platform, (2) develop an understanding of the high-quality product information we’re looking for and (3) design and implement scalable methodologies to improve the catalog. How can we automatically extract essential product attributes, such as brands, colors, sizes and styles? How can we determine which product information is preferred? How can we flag incomplete or incorrect product information at scale? And how can we leverage product images to enrich product information?

You develop a long-term vision on your product and generate buy in and traction for it,oth within the product team, as well as with the larger organization. Driving adoption is key, because the product catalog is interwoven within the very fabric of our platform. You also actively promote an experiment-driven way of working, while ensuring that existing features keep working flawlessly. So a deep understanding of the domain’s technological potential and limitations is a base requirement.

Because you supplement a master’s degree with Business Analyst and Product Owner experience in comparable tech- and data-driven environments. Agile/Scrum makes you happy. Big Data is your favorite playground. To be successful in this position, you also need a talent for connecting with people from divergent backgrounds. This obviously includes your team members, who look to you for inspiration and focus. Visionary qualities are a must. As are a pioneering drive and a passion for hands-on experimentation: rapid value creation based on prototypes and experiments is pivotal. And finally, you have a solid understanding of underlying technical processes and a sensitive radar for innovations that add partner/customer value.
