How do you make our customers happy?
Bol.com is changing retail to make the daily lives of 12 million customers easier. We cannot and wouldn’t want to go about that alone. And we don’t. We team up with 35,000 commercial partners who enrich our retail tech platform with their unique products. Partners who are in turn empowered by, among many other things, real-time insights into customer behavior that our large tech community facilitates. How do customers and partners interact on and with our platform? What are the pain points? And how can we improve our service? As Senior Software Engineer – Data, you find the answers to these questions!
The biggest challenge
We process roughly 40,000 messages per second. Our streaming data environment grows by about 5TB per day. It’s a challenge for our tech teams just to keep up. And measuring this wealth of data is only the first step. Capitalizing on those measurements (actionable insights are key) is on another plane.
Your responsibilities as Software Engineer in Data
- You develop clean, high-performance code
- You make sure our data is running smoothly
- You think of ways to make solutions scalable and future-proof
- Help your team grow and team up with business stakeholders to ensure that solutions add customer value
- You take full, end-to-end ownership over team solutions
- Experiment with cutting-edge tooling – including tooling you add to the stack
As Java Engineer, you will join one of our Scrum teams. We believe in ownership, and you will have a mandate (together with your team) to develop features end-to-end. At bol.com, we are big on autonomy, and that makes us strong: we expect you to make all (technical) choices along the way but also to assume ownership when things go awry. You build it – you run it – you love it is our mantra, and we live it every day.
3 reasons why this is(n’t) for you
- Yes, if you can reliably deliver time-critical data by the terabyte
- Yes, if your Java development skills are undisputed
- Yes, if colleagues consider you a fun person to work with, you embrace agility and you are not scared to share an opinion that deviates from the norm
- No, if you think business considerations only exist to be ignored; #letthemeatcode
- Not, because you want to be taken by the hand; autonomy & ownership are not your thing
- No, if you are allergic to fun and haven’t laughed out loud since you were a toddler
Where you’ll work
As an Engineer, you will join one of our teams within The Platform Space, keeping the fabric of our entire universe together. We enable roughly 600 developers in other spaces to shine like stars. Home to the hardcore techies, we deliver the self-service solutions for Data. And a platform that will never be ‘finished’, because bol.com has been reinventing retail since 1999. And we always will be. If there’s a better way to do something, we’re working on it! Together with our customers, partners, and over 2,000 colleagues. And hopefully together with you. Nice to know: our tech community shares an ambition to work hard and play hard in equal measure. Our teams deploy their own code to the production environment. And (once back in the office) you can socialize on our soccer field, in the games room and in the bar on Friday afternoons. Gezellig!
