How do you delight our customers?

Bol.com continuously advances its platform to create a better tomorrow for over 12 million customers and over 50,000 trading partners. No small feat. Our advertising propositions, which help shoppers discover products and advertisers reach customers, play an important role in bol.com’s ambitions – and here is where you’ll make the difference. Because data informs decisions, frames conversations, and changes perceptions and you rise to the occasion to ensure it can be used effectively and responsibly.

The biggest challenge

Advertising via Bol is growing at a fast clip, becoming increasingly important for bol.com. The number of colleagues, the complexity of the tech, and the breath of initiatives are rapidly expanding. Data needs are no exception. To continue to scale at high velocity it is important that we create and maintain a clear and consistent language around our data, simplify our data model, and add some of the rigor behind to our processes and data pipelines. Think of ideas such as building our our semantic data layer, implementing data contracts, and creating infrastructure for us to manage SLAs. Will you lead the charge for us here?

What you’ll do as Analytics Engineer

You’ll join a group of data analyst and analytics engineer in bol.com’s advertising analytics team, which aim to make people, programs and products in the advertising organisation more performant through data. This is a new function within the team, so you get to lead in force multiplying the impact of analysts from day 0.

Your workload covers three main areas: (1) you maintain our stack (E.g. our deployments of GIT, Dbt, Airflow, and GCP resources). Through your efforts you make the lives of analyst as easy as possible whilst enforcing a high-quality bar; (2) you take lead in managing and simplifying our data model – reducing complexity and making our pipelines more and (3) you offer thought leadership on how write, automate, and review our code. Clean Code principles such as test-driven development, naming conventions, small functions, and DRY, are what you practise and preach. You ensure data transformations are tested, documented, monitored, performant and adhere to our security & privacy policies.

  • Design, create and maintain analytics friendly datasets that are easy to consume and cost effective.
  • Implement best practice around tools and concepts like; Git, CI/CD, Kubernetes, Python, SQL, Airflow, Dbt, data testing, monitoring, and alerting, to create a state-of-the-art analytics environment that enforces quality standards.
  • Simplify our data model to reduce complexity, centralize definitions and exploit synergies between our various projects.
  • You use your strong communication skills to train and support your colleague Analysts in the ways of the Analytics Engineer through pair-programming and workshops.
  • You won’t be working alone. You help analyst model their pipelines, optimize queries, and apply data engineering best practices. You also actively collaborate with bol.com’s wider analytics engineering and data engineering community to improve our data stack at scale.

3 reasons why this is (not) for you

  • - Passive No, if you have a hard time forming and expressing your opinion. Your contribution in meetings is generally limited to shaking your head and nodding
  • - Output over outcome No, if your work ends when you complete a feature – who cares how users experience it
  • - Conservative No, if you are not curious to new techniques and methods and rely on one-trick-pony power.
  • + You’ve built up experience and love to share it Yes, if you have 3+ relevant experience (data engineer, analytics engineer, business intelligence engineer, advanced analyst, or related role) and like to share your knowledge and experience with others.
  • + High quality code & data Yes, if you have a deep interest in analytics and get excited by finetuning queries, data models, and coding principles. A background in software engineering is a plus.
  • + SQL, Python and Git Yes, if SQL, Python and Git are your home away from home. Experience with Dbt is a plus.

This is where you’ll work

You’ll join an international group of 7+ analytics professionals in bol.com’s Advertising Analytics team which supports a wide range of Product, Commercial, Operation, Strategy and Finance teams drive bol.com’s Retail Media business. We speak English at work. Since the team was founded in the summer of 2021, we’ve shipped over 60 data solutions (dashboards, analyses, tools) to support our customers in their work and have built a modern data stack on GCP using amongst others Git, Airflow, Dbt, and Tableau and various python libraries to enable advanced analytics. Our world is exciting and vast and our scope changes as the business grows.

It is our responsibility to enable an environment that unleashes the power of diversity.
