Bol.com is transforming retail to simplify daily life for 11.5 million customers. Not in a vacuum, but together with ~35,000 partner sellers who enrich our retail tech platform with unique propositions. Naturally, we strive for ‘matches made in heaven’ – customer/partner interactions that leave both parties craving for more. Achieving this is challenging, given the volume of platform interactions and the fact we have few peers. So our 100+ tech teams constantly experiment with new ways to make customers happier and partners more successful. That requires a hassle-free experimentation platform that allows every team to (a) experiment to its heart’s content and (b) gauge the impact of changes.
The biggest challenge
Yes, bol.com is data-driven. But that isn’t enough. To leverage our data-driven mindset, we need clear insights into the effect of changes. The Experimentation team empowers development teams to use these building blocks to create better customer experiences. Our platform supports a culture of learning and promotes hypothesis-driven experimentation. Because the best learnings are derived from data and the wisest decisions are informed by it. We stimulate an experimental mindset by making it ridiculously easy for any team to set up an experiment anywhere within the bol.com ecosystem. If it’s not ridiculously easy, we’re simply not done yet!
Your responsibilities as Software Engineer - Experimentation Platform
- Contribute to an API that ties our platforms together, including our website and apps
- Work on a React application to manage experiments: from creation to evaluation
- Help design a data pipeline that crunches TBs of data to extract performance evaluation metrics on experiments
- Support the correct statistical interpretation of the data
- Facilitate teams and people to run tests autonomously
A successful Software Engineer in Team Experimentation needs a well-rounded skill set. We challenge you to roll up your sleeves and flex your coding and conceptual analysis muscles. Our platform encompasses a variety of technical areas, and you contribute to all of them. Sometimes a skill you picked up years ago will make the difference we’re looking for. Fantastic! Other times you will need to be adventurous and learn new tools and techniques. And become an even better all-rounder by collaborating closely with (and learning from) your team members – even if they operate light-years outside of your comfort zone!
As a member of our multicultural team, you will work on a comprehensive range of topics and partner with people from wildly diverging backgrounds and with different skill sets. Online controlled experiments aside, our work involves optimizing algorithms, e.g. for our expansive logistics and customer service operations. The impact you can have here is huge. Both on an organizational and a more personal level because the platform you create, manage and optimize, allows colleagues to experiment and shine. It’s the epicenter of the bol.com expertise center!

Before the next interview we will ask you to take an online assessment. We’ll also discuss the position and your team in depth.
