How do you make our customers happy?
Bol.com is transforming retail to simplify daily life for 12 million customers. Not on our lonesome, but together with 39,000 partners that do business on our retail tech platform. Together, we now offer 33 million products. Due to the sheer number of products, it’s challenging to wow customers with relevant product suggestions. Our Search algorithms need to be as Agile as our engineers. And our engineers need to have a working understanding of the data science that accelerates Search agility. Do you fit that bill?
The biggest challenge
Team 2Q supplies the code behind our search suggestions and continually tests if the suggestions we offer are indeed what users need in their browsing or shopping experience. Current projects include a spellchecker and a model to interpret search queries better. That may sound basic, but you’ll have to draw on your experience in a data science environment to be successful in this role. After all, our work revolves around leveraging data science to provide relevant search suggestions…
Your responsibilities as Senior Software Engineer in Data Science - Search
The daily work in team 2Q is quite diverse. We strive to continuously learn, and to improve our solutions on an ongoing basis. You are responsible for the implementation and operation of the services that host our search suggestions. That requires you to be comfortable with the data science aspects of our work. You also have to take joy in interpreting A/B tests, because our team performs extensive A/B testing before we release any change to production.
Our stack currently includes Java (Spring Boot, Apache Beam), Python, Docker, and GCP (Kubernetes, SQL/BigQuery, Dataflow). This is all tooling you either need to be intimately familiar with already or want to get up close and personal with. As for the setting: 2Q consists of two data scientists, one senior backend engineer, a business analyst and a product owner. The engineers and data scientists work together daily, so as an engineer, you need to grasp the data scientists’ goals and challenges and support them in those.
3 reasons why this is(n’t) for you
- Yes, if you are a communicative team player with a good sense of humor – you’ll need it to survive working with those über-serious data scientists (just kidding, guys!)
- Yes, if you are versed in Java (knowledge of Python is a plus), Docker & Kubernetes (Google cloud platform) and SQL/BigQuery: we read/write/analyze a lot of data
- Yes, if you believe in multidisciplinary teams where engineers can review data scientists’ work. And the other way around.
- No, if you are not even remotely interested in search suggestions
- No, if you think Data Science (and data scientists) originated on Mars and should have stayed there
- No, if you don’t look forward to working in a diverse international and multidisciplinary team where ownership and autonomy are actively encouraged
